Shop for books in bookstores this Christmas

At the rate that bookstores are closing down, we need to support them before they disappear. I've got nothing whatsoever against purchasing books online, but there's nothing so satisfying, so rich and full of soft memories as flicking through the pages of a paper book. They even smell right. I don't get quite the same emotion when downloading an e-book. Sure, I buy lots of e-books, but I feel as if I've made an investment when I buy a hardback or paperback, an investment in knowledge and history.

I sit up in bed at night with one propped on my knees (yes, you can do that with an e-reader - I agree) and angle the bedside lamp to glow over the pages. And then I wriggle down to finger through the pages.

Instead of aftershave and boxes of biscuits, this Christmas buy your loved ones a real book. Quick, before they disappear.

  1. There is nothing like a real book. While I wouldn't ever get rid of my ereader, the tactile pleasure of a book is something digital just can't match. Lovely post. Everyone go buy a book!!!

  2. Vonnie, your post is timely and perfect. We're trying to get something going here called Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day and the first target date is December 4th. I posted about it a few days ago.

Maybe you can get our friends 'down under' to participate. What a 'novel' idea! (Sorry . . . )

  4. vonnie,
even though TAKING BACK HIS WIDOW will be published by an e-pub, I picked it because it will release ot in print also. I fully agree with you- I LOVE BOOKS! There's just something about curling up with a good book isnt there.

  5. Good to hear so many of you love that tactile pleasure of actually holding on to a book. The more we push books into the background, the more I think of Fahrenheit 451.
